The Liyuan Library opened in May 2012, in the hillside village of Jiaojiehe. Architect Li Xiaodong started working with the community before funding was in place in the hopes that a well-designed library would not only improve life in the vil-lage but also boost the local economy by attracting tourists to the scenic area. Liyuan Library is situated near Zhihui Valley in Jiaojiehe Village in the Huairou District of Beijing. The building is a sturdy wooden frame structure clad in thousands of the kind of sticks the locals usually use for firewood. This stick facade still allows sunlight into the building, while protecting readers from the sun's glare. Liyuan Library is a tourist destination.Many go there not in order to read the books but to stand inside an architectural marvel. And now there will be more tourists planning to visit, because its architect, Li Xiaodong, has just won Canada’s inaugural Moriyama RAIC International Prize, which includes $100,000.
